Effective presentation skills matter
Many studies have found that public speaking is the number one fear for most people, outranking flying, snakes, insects, and even death. Ironically, it is also one of the skills that can make or break a person’s career.
How do you feel when you are presenting? Are you well prepared, relaxed and confident that your message will have the desired impact on your audience? Or, is the thought of
standing in front of a group of people, going on a sales call, or even sitting at the head of a conference room table make you want to freak out? Whether you get up in front of formal audiences on a regular basis or simply leading a meeting, your presentation skills will have a significant impact on your desired results.
Exceptional presentation skills are key to many influential roles in today's business world. The good news is that you can improve your game with training and practice. No matter what you do or where you live, anyone can learn the skills and techniques needed to increase your level of confidence and effectiveness when presenting.
The best presenters are constantly improving their skills. To get better, you must be able to look honestly at your performance and be willing to make changes. I have met a bunch of people who overestimate the quality of their presentation skills; I am sure you know a few as well! And, I have also met a ton of people who underestimated how great they are at presenting. The best place to start is to ask for feedback from others. This will make you aware of your strengths and opportunities for improvement. The other piece of advice is to practice your presentation out loud. This is critical, winging it does not work.
