Optimism During the Winter
Freezing temps? Check. Gray skies? Check. Crabby mood? Check again.
Optimism isn’t just a good thing–it’s a necessary thing. It gives us the motivation and confidence we need to go after the things we seek. January and February can appear to be cold and somber. You may be feeling slightly depressed and low on energy and motivation. It may be gloomy outside, but your outlook doesn’t have to be.
There's not much we can do about snow-shoveling, stressful winter storms, and lack of day light. But we can fight back against seasonal mood slumps. In fact, there are proven strategies that favorably adjust your endorphin, dopamine and serotonin levels — better known as the brain chemicals most integral to happiness.
The best way to mitigate the winter blahs is first and foremost – think positive. You can affect your own happiness with the attitude that you choose. Negative thoughts drain you of energy and keep you from being in the present moment. The more you give in to your negative thoughts, the stronger they become.
I encourage you to redirect your thoughts. This is simply replacing a negative thought with a positive one. For example, replace “I’ll never get that job promotion” with “I will get that promotion before the end of the quarter.” If you allow yourself to keep thinking negative, then only negativity will come to you!
Take time to smile. There are days when smiling is the farthest thought from your mind, but just the simple act of smiling puts you into a more positive mindset. Smile when you see others. Smile for no reason at all. You may be surprised how helpful this can be to your attitude. It works.
The power of the mind is an amazing thing. Our lives are the result of our own thought patterns, whether they be positive or negative ones. A change in attitude can make the winter months more enjoyable.
